As per New York State article 444-b, a “Home inspection” means the process by which a home inspector observes and provides a written report of the systems and components of a residential building including but not limited to heating system, cooling system, plumbing system, electrical system, structural components, foundation, roof, masonry structure, exterior and interior components or any other related residential building component as recommended or required by the department through regulation to provide a client with objective information about the condition of the residential building.
A Home Inspection can identify potential problems and issues with a property that may not be visible to the untrained eye. This can help you make an informed decision about the purchase of a property and can also help you plan for any necessary repairs or maintenance.
The amount of time to perform a home inspection will vary based on several factors such as the size of the home, the condition of the home, the equipment and equipment system found in the home, access or lack of access to certain sections of the home, and even the weather condition on the day of inspection. On average, most home inspections should take between 2-4 hours.
The price for a home inspection can vary based on several factors which include, but not limited to: the type of home inspection requested (e.g. an annual inspection may be cheaper than a pre-listing and/or a first time home buyer home inspection), the size of the home (based on square feet and/or whether the home is a single-family or a multi-family), any additional ancillary services requested, etc. You should expect to spend a minimum of $500 [as of year 2025] for a full home inspection of a single-family home (without any ancillary services).
